According to the Canadian Mental Health Association, 1 in 5 children have a mental illness. St Thomas author Kristin Legault has struggled with mental illness her whole life. She wrote a series of children books about mental illness to raise awareness and help others like herself.14ea7e_929912a631724c12a898dbc169ae7127-mv2_d_5184_3456_s_4_2

In the series, Legault describes different mental illnesses in the perspective of a child. For example, she explains the symptoms of depression in “Zoey Has a Very Glum Day.” She hopes that her books will teach children that mental illness is like any other illness like a cold or a flu and should be treated the same.

“The Children’s Mental Health Series” will be available for purchase in local bookstores this fall.
