At 20 years old, Nikko Esguerra has already started to make a name for himself in the London videographer scene. Along with the countless hours put into perfecting his craft, Esguerra says that he has social media and networking to thank for getting him where he is today.
He started off by filming his friends Thien Pham-Nguyen and Zanna Alishahi, a pair of DJs who form the local EDM group, KINGZMN. Through the musical pair, Esguerra would meet more and more people which eventually led to him getting a job as a photographer at The Barking Frog.
He used the job to showcase the photos he took on the bar’s Facebook page and from there, people started taking notice. The simple act of people sharing the photos he took of them on Instagram helped his name get spread around until he eventually got offered to film a number of different music festivals.
“That’s where I met most of the people who work in this industry”
A fellow videographer named Christopher Evans reached out to Esguerra and offered him a role in filming behind the scenes footage for Block Party, a music festival that hosted acts such as Oliver Heldens and DVBBS. As well as providing great material for his portfolio, Esguerra added that this event was a stepping stone in his career because “that’s where I met most of the people who work in this industry.”
Since then, Esguerra has received more filming jobs and has continued to use social media to his advantage. He often posts on his Instagram and Facebook accounts and uses both platforms to connect with other up-and-coming videographers in the Forest City.
As for the future, Esguerra says his biggest dream is to “go on tour with a DJ or music artist” and to film the whole experience. However, that dream may soon become a reality as he and KINGZMN were recently invited to play at the Omnia Nightclub in San Diego and to record an in-studio collaboration with Deorro, a famous DJ whose videos have already achieved over 40-million views on YouTube. Before leaving for the States, Esguerra took time to open up about himself in the video below.
