After the London Knights had a game last Friday night against Ottawa where they led throughout and weren’t really challenged in that game, last night’s game against the Owen Sound Attack was different. The Attack would come out of the gates firing in this game and would chase Brett Brochu (who was making his fourth consecutive start for the Knights) just under ten minutes in with three goals and he would be replaced by Jordan Kooy who was seeing his first action in three weeks. After the Knights switched goalies they would vastly improve after the first half of the period only resulted in 3 shots for the Knights the second half of the first period would result in seven shots for the Knights. ” Yeah you know I felt like the guys felt like they let Brochu down and the boys played better in front of Kooy tonight.” Said assistant coach rick Steadman about the performance of the Knights in the first period.
The adjustments would continue out of the room for the second period as the knights would score four goals in the period to tie the game heading into the final twenty minutes. Three goals were scored on the powerplay. “Yeah obviously special teams were huge in the second period and from our penalty kill to our powerplay it’s one of the best in the league that really helps us out.” Said Knights Forward Antonio Stranges on how important the Special teams were to the Knights come back in the game.
The newly announced leadership group was instrumental in the comeback for the Knights against Owen Sound. New captain Alec Regula opened the scoring and added an assist. and being the captain is something special for Regula ” Yeah you know it’s something that will stay with me for the rest of my hockey career and whatever happens I can say that I was captain of the London Knights which not everyone can say.” The Knights would continue their offensive onslaught in the third period against Mack Guzda but would not let the go ahead goal in and the game would need overtime for the fans in London.
In the overtime frame the Knights had a chance to end it thanks to defenceman Ryan Merkley however he would shot wide and Barrett Kerwin of the Owen Sound attack would go down the ice and end the game with a goal to make the game 5-4 to send the fans home disappointed. Despite the result of the game the knights will take a lot of positives into their next game tonight against the Saginaw Spirit on the road. ” Regula started us off pretty good with the first goal and we just used that as motivation and our confidence is definitely high because he almost came back and won being down 3 goals twice.” The Knights will make the trip down to Saginaw on Saturday Night to face the Saginaw Spirit for the first time this season.
