The City of London is getting ready to implement its Green Bin Program. To prepare for the program the City will be participating in the first Green in the City event of the year. Green in the City is a seminar series run by the London Environmental Network. Tonight’s seminar will have three speakers and take place virtually.
“We will hear from Jay Stanford the Director of Environment, Fleet and Solid Waste. He’ll be sharing, an update on where the programs at and what they’re hoping to implement. We will also be hearing from the City of Hamilton staff and the region of Waterloo staff.” explained Leah Derikx, the Operations Manager, for the London Environmental Network.
Both Hamilton and Waterloo have already implemented Green Bin programs which is something Derikx believes will be very helpful.
“I think it’s a good idea to have those other cities there because they’ve already been through this. There might be some common myths about green bins, or some things that didn’t work that we could learn from to make our program better. Ultimately the program will be tailored to Londoners,” said Derikx.

Those who participate in the event will have a chance to ask questions and provide feedback.
“That information is really important because it’ll determine how they implement it. Ultimately, they want the green bin program to be well received. They want people to be able to use it and have it work for Londoners. So the more information that Londoners can provide the better”
Those who wish to provide feedback aren’t required to participate in the event. You can also provide feedback online through the City’s get involved page. The page will be open even after the seminar has taken place.
Under normal circumstances, the event would be in person. However, Green in the City events have been run virtually over the last year. This has opened the door to allow more people to participate.
“We always get a good attendance. So when the events were in person, they were held at the London Public Library downtown. We always maxed out their meeting rooms. Since it’s online, we can actually go beyond that room capacity and get over one hundred people in a room, all engaged on the same topic.” Said Leah.
The seminar is taking place tonight between 7 and 8:30. You can sign up to participate through Event Brite. The event is completely free and will be available to rewatch on the Green in the City Website.
