Completion of high school or secondary comes with a lot of feelings for both parents and students. Some parents and students feel happy or anxious because the student is moving to the next phase of education or they may be taking a gap year, but others, just don’t know what to do after high school.
School counselors and career advisors are having conversations with high school students about opportunities open after high school.
A lot of students choose to continue with their education to post-secondary. Whether be college or university, the application process may not be easy for all students and parents. The first process when applying to a college or university is deciding the program one is going for. Some students may feel confused because they do not know which route to take.
Mrs. Tracey Winspinski, a school counselor says a child should open their minds and explore what they enjoy doing. After exploration, they should visit the college’s website and understand the program, if it alines with something they are thinking about. College can also be used as a ladder to university. Although a student may also have the option to go to university directly from high school.
Tracey also insists that going into a program and discovering is not what you enjoy should not be felt like a failure, rather it should be used as a learning opportunity.
Some students may decide to go for an apprenticeship program. These are programs that provide training. After the apprenticeship program, they will be ready for the job market.
Taking a gap year is also an option.
“This may be that someone is not sure what they want to take in post-secondary, for traveling, taking a break from school or getting a job”. Tracey encouraged the students that they might also look at this option.
Children need a lot of help when considering these options because they have a big impact on their life.
