Medway High School has been dealing with a streak of violent incidents. And social media has only exasperated the problem.
Earlier this week, two male students were identified fighting in a park nearby the school. Around the same time, three female students were also involved in a separate physical altercation.
Videos of the fights were shared on social media, including one that showed a student being kicked in the head while he was down.
The next morning, another altercation took place, involving three male students. Middlesex OPP was dispatched to the school, and attended the school all day to investigate the incident.
As a result of the investigation, two individuals had been charged. Michael Carlsen, an 18 year old Londoner, has been charged with assault causing bodily harm. A 15 year old youth has also been charged with assault and will remain unnamed.
Principal Gregory Howard said in a statement to parents that some of these incidents had been shared to social media, along with several rumours that ended up being untrue.
“As Principal, I addressed the student body via an announcement near the end of the day to clarify these occurrences and reassure students and staff of their safety,” said Howard in an email sent to parents.
“We will continue to address any concerns as they arise and hold individuals accountable for their actions. Student safety, mental health and well-being remain our paramount concern.”
Parents on Facebook weighed in on the recent incidents, with parents concerned for the safety of their children at the school.
One commenter said “My daughter in Grade 9 did not go today… she was pretty shaken with the texts and social media flying around yesterday…I can tell you now this is going to end badly if something isn’t done to stop this.”
Another, who says they’re a elementary teacher, says there’s a “Huge shortage of EAs that are the critical staff to support students with many different needs.”
“There are barely any supports available now for our students or staff. It’s desperately needed. Please speak up and help educators advocate for the needs of your children.”
The OPP investigation into the other altercations is ongoing. Further updates will be provided when available.
