The endangered species, known as Shagreen snails, was discovered near Woodstock at Snake Woods Nature Preserve by Species at Risk Biologist with the Upper Thames River Conservation Authority, Scott Gillingwater.
Upper Thames Conservation Authority says Snake Woods Nature Preserve could be home to the last remaining mainland population of Shagreen snails in Canada.
This snail species population has decreased because of habitat loss and fragmentation, but climate change is also threatening the species, says Upper Thames Conservation Authority. Shagreen snails are now endangered provincially and federally.
