The election for a new Fanshawe Student Union president is coming to a close tomorrow afternoon.
The elected candidate will represent the interests of over 21,000 students and 200 employees at Fanshawe, taking over the role currently held by FSU President Siddharth Singh. The president’s duties include taking feedback from students, attending meetings, reviewing policies, and addressing issues within multiple committees.
Singh says every single candidate is unique, bringing their own set of strengths and weaknesses, yet all have interests in listening to and advocating for the students.
“As president, it’s not for you to decide whether an issue is small or big. It’s an issue,” says Singh.
“You have to be really careful with what issues you would like to work on, because you won’t have the opportunity to work on every single thing. It’s about time management, listening skills, being organized, and being empathetic.”
Singh says the issues students face evolve every single year, but the most pressing issues involve food insecurity and having the lowest grants for Ontario college students in Canada.
“Externally there is a lot of work that needs to be done and I think this will be priority for the upcoming years.”
There are seven presidential candidates, including: Adam Boyce, Shadé Dias, Harpinder Kaur, Bernardo Macapagal, Farhan Malek, Drashti Patel, and Jerry Thomas.
Voting will close tomorrow at 2pm, with voting available on the Fanshawe Online website and in the FSU Student Center. The elected candidate will be announced at 3pm in Forwell Hall, as well as live on the FSU Instagram account.
