The 2007 film turned musical, ‘Waitress’, has made its three-week run debut at the Grand Theatre.
The musical follows main character Jenna Hunterson, a small-town baker and waitress who dreams of escaping her abusive husband, Earl. After unexpectedly becoming pregnant with Earl’s child, she starts an affair with her obstetrician, Jim Pomatter where she then finds herself entering a baking competition as a way out of her problems due to the grand prize it offers. The story is set at Joe’s Pie Diner where Jenna confides in her friends Becky and Dawn; both of whom work with her.
Using a 1950s inspired diner set complete with pantry and baking props alongside music written by Grammy-nominated singer-songwriter Sara Bareilles, the musical beautifully encapsulates Jenna Hunterson’s story through emotionally-driven songs, witty script, and charming characters.
“I think it’s interesting because it’s quite a very dark theme and I cry every single night, but it’s like, full of joy and lightheartedness and laughter and a lot of love,” said Elysia Cruz, who plays Dawn in the production. “All of these characters are so endearing and charming and so relatable and I think that’s what makes the musical ‘Waitress’ so phenomenal.” she added.
The musical gained four nominations at the 2016 Tony Awards including Best Musical and Best Original Score. Despite its heavy subject matter, it gained it’s massive following due to its relatability and how it showed female empowerment, friendship, and womanhood; all of which provided audiences hope, confidence, and ambition.
The Grand Theatre is set to be hosting ‘Waitress’ until April 12 of 2025 with tickets starting at $44.
