Homelessness is one of London, Ontario’s biggest growing issues, with youth homelessness not too far behind. According to the London social service agency, there are around 3,600 homeless youth in London, Ontario, each year, and according to the city of London website, as of March 31st, 2024, there were 1758 people currently reported homeless, with 24% of them being between the ages of 16-24.
With this ongoing issue becoming seriously noticed in the downtown area, organizations like YOU help to try and put a stop to this with their latest attempt being the opening of their new location at Joan’s place.
Executive director of YOU (Youth Opportunities Unlimited), Steve Cordes, says, “to make a safe environment for the homeless youth, we need more shelter spaces, more resting spaces, and more opportunities for people.”
Mr Cordes also added that what could be contributing to the homeless youth number “access to affordable apartments, for example, the renovation of old apartments, which could cause landlords to raise prices, falling out with families with often the causes relating to trauma or falling out with significant others.
Able to speak with some of the homeless community while downtown, many said what in their opinion could help keep them off the streets, “more or cheaper housing, More access to food, and more support from the city.”
It’s clear what this rising issue needs, and it’s “more”.
