U.S midterm elections got under way Tuesday, with many on this side of the border watching results.
As polls predicted Democrats could take the win, many Londoners were paying close attention.
“We are very interested because of some priorities of the Trump administration affect Southwestern Ontario; most notably undermining the North Atlantic Trade Organization (NATO), and also imposing trade restrictions directly impacts businesses here in London,” said Matt Farrell, a professor of political science at Fanshawe College.
“We are going to be watching for a change in the House or the Senate or both, as that could have the potential to push b
ack against the President’s tariff’s.”
Businesses that import to the U.S., such as London’s General Dynamics Land Systems (GDLS) are directly and often financially affected by U.S. policy.
The first polls closed in Kentucky and Indiana around 6 p.m.
“One thing Londoners should watch for is districts that are more divided between Democrat and Republican and see who wins where, as this will show across the board what direction it is going,” said Farrell.
This comes at a critical time as tensions between Canada and the United States continue to grow.
