As of Thursday, March 2nd, customers at Tremblett’s Independent in Ingersoll will have to find alternative options for bagging their groceries. The store announced a few weeks ago that they would be eliminating all single use plastic grocery bags by the 2nd.
The move away from the single use plastics was announced by Loblaws in June of last year. They said that they planned to eliminate the single use plastic bags by the first few months of this year as part of their new initiative to help prevent the plastic bags from entering landfills across Ontario.
Loblaws has said that they aim to make their stores and products environmentally friendly, and have created the ESG (environmental, Social, Governance). Their notable plan is to achieve net-zero greenhouse gas emissions by 2040 to help fight climate change.
One cashier at the Independent grocer said that the affect of the bags being eliminated might see a rise of frustration amongst the customers, especially if they do not tend to bring other alternatives with them. She said on a typical shift that she sells 250 bags, and that her job may change drastically once the bags are no longer found in stores.
