London is set to see above normal temperatures throughout the remainder of the week.
This comes following Tuesday’s special weather statement, warning Londoners about high temperatures and humidity.
“It’s important to take it seriously because it can be hazardous for some people,” says Operational Meteorologist with Environment Canada, Trudy Kidd.
“It’s fine if you have air conditioning, but it gets sort of hazardous for certain populations that don’t get that relief from that heat.”
Kidd says that, while Tuesday was the worst of it for the week, the warm weather will continue, hitting an average of 26 degrees Celsius through to Friday.
“This time of year, it’s always important to remember things you can do to keep cool. It’s going to be hot, it’s going to be sticky, and even though we won’t have heat criteria every day, it’s still going to be hot.”
She goes on to say the temperatures seen so far and that the city will see this week are well above the regular highs usually seen.
“Usually this time of year we see a high of around 21 degrees Celsius. These temperatures have been pretty far beyond that, but we’ll go back to normal this weekend.”
She says that with the warm weather, will also come consistent reminders to check on those inside of cars, saying that it will always be a threat to certain demographics each summer.
“You wish you didn’t have to remind people, but you do. Make sure you aren’t leaving pets, children, elderly in the car, they can get really hot,” says Kidd.
“You can leave a wallet or a phone in the back seat so you can remember to take it when you go, then there are no surprises that you’ve forgotten someone important back there.”
She says that outside the car, you still have to be prepared to deal with the heat in other ways including limiting outdoor activities as well as being prepared to make changes for your regular day.
“Just a head’s up that you should be dressing pretty cool, and I don’t mean fashion. Dress for the hot weather, wear light colours, light materials, hats, sunglasses, all that sort of stuff.”
The City of London has officially opened up the slash pads located across the city, giving an outlet for families to keep cool, but there are ways for individuals to keep cool as well across the city.
“If you don’t have air conditioning, see if you can check out a cooled building like a library, community centre, a shopping mall, those are great places to cool down as well.”
Wednesday’s forecast is set to see highs of 27 degrees Celsius, with Thursday reach highs of 25, and Friday inching up to 26. The weekend is expected to bring some slight dips, with highs sitting around 23 on Saturday and 24 on Sunday, then dropping down even further into next week.
