Last night the top music groups at Western University faced off at the Spoke for the final night of Battle of the Bands. This event takes place every month of the school year on the last Wednesday of each month.
The bands that took part in the competition last night were Sunset Boyz, the Graham Maycock Band, Laddy and the Lads, the Jeremy Fox Band, and Nick Baha. Each group gave it their all last night; they were all able to get the audience involved with some iconic cover songs in the lineup. Some of the top songs that the audience sung along to was “When You Were Young”- The Killers, “Sweet Home Alabama”- Lynyrd Skynyrd, “Mr. Brightside” – The Killers, and “Creep” – Radiohead.
I spoke with the members of Sunset Boyz, who opened the event last night. The lead singer discussed how beneficial the event is for them because it not only gets the group more comfortable on stage, but allows more ears to hear their music. Battle of the Bands gives groups the opportunity to gain traction and attention for entering into the music industry. The lead singer said that they have just finished an original song, so they want to use the event to gain feedback on it to see how they can continue to grow.
There were 3 judges at the table to decide which group had the most talent, they were selected by the USC and the event coordinator at the Spoke. At the end of the night there was only one group left standing, that group was the Jeremy Fox Band, they opened with an incredible cover of Radiohead’s Creep and didn’t look back. The Jeremy Fox Band won “Best Band at Western” and will head to McMaster to take on the top bands from numerous Ontario universities.
