On April 1, 2023 the Federal Government raised the tax on beer by 6.3%. With these prices rising it may leave businesses with displeased customers, The provincial liquor board indicated that beer tax would go up. Meaning that the price increase that was put in effect in Ontario’s liquor retailers on April 1 would differ depending on the specific product.
On April 1 the Canada Revenue Agency began to allow licensees to report and remit excise duty on beer at the lower rates. However, licensees that choose to pay the duty in accordance with the proposed new rates as of this date will be required to pay the difference in applicable duty should the enabling legislation not be enacted by Parliament.
The regular rates of excise duty were determined in accordance with Part II of the Schedule to the Act. They apply to the following:
- beer packaged in Canada in excess of 75,000 hectolitres in a calendar year
- beer packaged in Canada that is either:
- imported beer
- produced from imported wort
Thomas Caughell, an employee at The Beer Store in London spoke about the reaction from customers at The Beer Store, He said that there’s been “Small outrage with customers and stores” and that the companies the beer is delivered to have been “Ordering less beer than usual, the lists are getting shorter”. Thomas gave his opinion saying that once the government contract is up he feels the company would benefit from not resigning a contract as the business is down as of the past week and a half. In Conclusion, the beer tax is not something the community appears to be pleased with.
