The past few years and even fast forward into this year Ontario has faced a lot of shortages around all the health fields such as nurses, doctors and volunteers saying that the government isn’t helping.
In the most recent report from the Register Nurses association it found that “Ontario entered the Covid Pandemic Nearly 24,000 RN’s short of the rest of Canada’s per-capita basis”. The report was released in February of 2023 all within the meanings of poor work area, poor help or poor funding.
Since the 1960’s the Children’s Health has been operating with London Health Science operating alongside it since 1997. Years now the London area has been home to a “Bigger” hospital group than a lot of other towns have in Ontario. They are also donation based a lot of the time.
This year is different however, for the London area, Children’s Health received a donation of Five-Million Dollars. The donation is courtesy of the Jahnke Family and has a lot of light around the hospital and the ways it’s done there. The donation allows them to use the donation solely on the hospital.
Dr. Alexandra Zorzi who’s been with the LHSC team since 2011 said “Working in such a field is hard especially if you are depending on donations, The donations help in so many ways…. From equipment to facility upgrades it’s a lot to think when you don’t know what’s coming in”
Zorzi explained when receiving a donation like this its “A lot of emotion as not only you think of the past patients who didn’t make it and or did you get a sense of Hope for the families that need to use the facilities in the future”
She furthered it with “ Working here is a lot of fun as everyday is different and a new challenge, as well it’s just the people you work with everyday it’s fun with a good group and it’s a good group we have here”.
This year marked the 10 year anniversary of the Children’s Radiothon, a day where radio stations from the London area air stories from Children’s Ambassadors and their parents. The day saw them be able to announce that they have been able to reach 1.6 million dollars through the 10 years based off of this event
Ollie the therapeutic clown is there almost everyday in the hospital and said at the radiothon “He enjoys the job he has very much. It’s a lot of fun meeting new people everyday and building friendships that last years’ ‘.
This year Ollie had a surprise celebration as the hospital celebrated his 20th birthday of being at the hospital. He said “ It’s a great job to have, It’s a wonderful position to be in, I meet a lot of wonderful people and it means alot to me”.
The impacts of a donation like this and an area like LHSC and Children’s puts a view in maybe a review is in order for how the field is being paid for as a whole to specifics with proper funding, further helping aid and further wanting a better care system in the areas of Ontario that need help with getting back on the right track for a better care for everybody.
