The forest city Velodrome is a Non-For-Profit association that offers riders of all ages the opportunity to cycle recreationally, improve health and fitness and develop cycling skills. In 2005 Rob Good and Albert Coulier made an indoor track in London in the old London knights arena for everyone to enjoy.
Today the Velodrome hosted for the first time a special learn-to-ride session in an effort to attract new members and to grow London’s cycling community. The event was open on Sunday from 10:00 a.m. to 2:00 pm and featured workers who where teaching kids to cycle and vendors who where promoting themselves, weather it was a bike fixing area or a information booth promoting a different track. Everyone who cycles was there and I was blown away by the turn out.
I first spoke to someone who was working at the Velodrome to get her opinion on what this kind of event can do for the people of London. She told me that ” This is a great way to learn about different ways to get involved in cycling in London, we’ve got lots of road racing groups, the biking lawyers, we’ve got London cycling here, consqueeky wheel which is more like an advocacy organization to get Londoners to ride more which we need, and an event like this is great because I have never been to the Velodrome before and this got me out to check it out and its an amazing place like its amazing that we have this in London we have this amazing track”.
I also talked to a spokesperson from the three port tour threeportttour.com and asked him, what this event means to him and cyclists in London. He said ” I feel great about it where promoting bicycling and where promoting the Forest City Velodrome and its one of the greatest sports facilities in London that not very many people know about. Yea its great to learn how to ride and its great for rider confidence and its great to have the bicycle community out, we all help each other”.
Never have I seen an arena with people as nice as the cyclists in the Velodrome, everyone was open to answering my questions and where so kind. It seemed like everyone knew each other and everyone was here on a mission, a mission to spread the buzz of biking .Yc
