It’s safe to say that the winter weather is slowly going away, and that sweet August heat is coming back to London. Which means activities like swimming, going to the park or even running can now be done!
That’s right, running season is back and the first event that kicked off the most warming time of the year was the third annual Springbank Sprint. The Springbank Sprint is a charity racing event where people are encouraged to sign up for the five races that they offer for families, racers and friends all around.
The Races include 10 kilometers run, five kilometers run, one kilometer’s kid’s run, 50- & 100-meter kids run as well as a brand-new race created this year.
The event also includes a fundraiser where the proceeds of each donation go toward the Children’s Health Foundation. The goal is to have each family or team participating to raise $1000 dollars or more in each of the races they are participating in.
The event is run and organized by a local race company for running known as Persistence Racing which is led by Owner and Race Director Neil McKay. Neil was able to talk about what some of the biggest things are that families and residents learn from this event.
“Yeah, I think it’s just a fun experience for the kids and a good family event so, in the past we’ve had people ranging from one years old to 93 as well as being able to raise some money for the children’s hospital along the way.”
He continued to talk about key parts of the event that are important, as well as the reason why these events are able to do so well with the response he gets from people.
“It’s been great. Like I always tell our volunteers, we can’t do this without volunteers so that’s really the key to making events like this work and we’ve got an awesome team of 20 to 25 volunteers today and they’re all here doing great things, going above and beyond what’s asked of them so it’s awesome.”
This year’s sprint was not like the previous two years fortunately. This year, Persistence Racing has introduced the Jacob McKay Memorial Tandem Challenge in honor of Neil’s late son Jacob, designed for corporate teams or running clubs which requires each runner to run five kilometers.
The next event that Persistence will host will be the Backyard Ultra which consists of a singular race around Lazarus Lake with the winner qualifying for the World Team Championship (More details on Race Roster or Persistence Racing’s official website).
