The Cambridge RedHawks are having a historic season in the Greater Ontario Hockey League (GOHL). Currently, the RedHawks are sitting with a franchise record of 42 wins and 5 losses.
With three games remaining in their regular season, the RedHawks have already surpassed their previous win record of 34 wins set in 2023.
Brandon Balcar, goalie for the RedHawks explains what makes this team so special. “It’s the culture we have in the dressing room. Everyone’s positive no matter what type of game we are in. If you are up by 20 or down by three, we’re always positive and encouraging each other.” Brandon is having his own historic season, posting a record 22 and four between the pipes.
Historic seasons rely on great coaching, and Balcar gives lots of praise for their coaches and staff. He notes the experience they bring to the table, including their NHL expertise, is a key part of their success. Balcar states that our coaches “are able to install that knowledge into us in a way that is easy to understand.”
The RedHawks have easily clinched their playoff spot with this historic record and are looking ahead to the playoffs. Balcar is planning on the RedHawks having a deep playoff run but is aware of potential upsets that he has seen in previous seasons.
When asked about who their biggest competition would be, he mentions the defending champion Chatham Maroons who are looking to repeat and the Fort Erie Meteors, who gave us the biggest challenge in our own division this season.
They’ll play their final regular season game on March 7th against the Caledonia Corvairs. Balcar is confident the Cambridge RedHawks can bring home the Sutherland Cup this season.
